A total of 31 companies involved in 20 innovation projects have been selected under the European project CESAM – Circular Economy and Sustainable Solutions for the Agri-Food Sector in the Mediterranean, and will receive €900,000 in funding to foster innovation and sustainability in the Mediterranean agri-food sector.
The CESAM project, led by the Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion, brings together key players from the agri-food innovation ecosystem of the Euroregion’s three member territories. These include regional innovation agencies, clusters, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) developing circular and sustainable solutions.
The project has a total budget of €3 million, 70% of which is funded by the European I3 – Interregional Innovation Investments instrument through the EISMEA agency (European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency), and is scheduled to run for three years, until August 2026.
At the end of 2024, CESAM launched a call to support innovation projects, receiving 105 applications from companies in the Euroregion. Projects had to align with four priority areas of the sector:
-
Industrial water treatment and recycling, and coordinated water use
-
Sustainable packaging: eco-design, plastic elimination, new materials or circular solutions
-
Process optimization and circular processes: waste reduction
-
By-product recovery: reusing surplus and waste to generate new products or energy sources
After two months of joint and interregional evaluation by experts from the three territories, the list of 20 selected projects involving 31 companies was announced on June 13. These projects will receive €900,000 in financial support, helping accelerate the development and commercialization of innovative and sustainable solutions.
Through CESAM, the Euroregion reaffirms its commitment to a circular, resilient and sustainable economy, promoting close collaboration between the territories’ innovation ecosystems. CESAM is a step forward towards a greener, more circular, and competitive agri-food model in the Mediterranean.
