Background

5th edition of LET’S CLEAN UP EUROPE in the Euroregion: Simultaneous waste collection returns to the coastline of Catalonia, Occitania, and the Balearic Islands

This year will see the 5th edition of LET’S CLEAN UP EUROPE, an annual simultaneous waste collection event in protected natural areas, coordinated by the Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion across its three territories

For the fifth consecutive year, the Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion, in collaboration with the Government of Catalonia through the Catalan Waste Agency, the Roses City Council, the Government of the Balearic Islands, and the Occitanie Region, a day of cleaning and environmental awareness as part of the European campaign Let’s Clean Up Europe (LCUE), whose main objective is to raise awareness about the effects of pollution and promote waste reduction. The activity consists of a simultaneous waste collection in three protected natural areas in their territories and will take place on Friday, October 3. It is worth noting the presence of Mr. Marc Vilahur, Mr. Ponç Feliu, Ms. Aina Torres, and Ms. Bàrbara Xamena among the authorities confirmed for the day.

As in previous editions, this event will involve the participation of almost 200 students from schools in the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, and the Occitanie region, who will come together to take action in the fight against pollution. The aim is not only to collect waste, but also to raise awareness of its effects and promote sustainable consumption habits.

The collection will take place in the Cap de Creus Natural Park (Girona, Catalonia) with the participation of the Empordà School Center, the Mondragó Natural Park (Mallorca, Balearic Islands) with the Santa Maria del Mar Primary School, and Etang de l’Or Site (Hérault, Occitanie region) with the Philippe Lamour and Etang d’Or schools. Beyond waste collection, the initiative includes workshops to reinforce the educational and environmental impact of the action with the collaboration of the company Plastic at Sea and the University of Barcelona’s cross-border TRAP project. This will be followed by a virtual meeting to analyze and assess the waste collected, with exchanges of good practices between classes to encourage collaboration across borders.

As in previous editions, this action symbolizes the union of young people from different territories for a common cause, reinforcing cooperation and environmental responsibility, since, despite the geographical distance, the students share objectives and act together in favor of nature.

The Euroregion considers the involvement of citizens, and young people in particular, to be key to building a more sustainable future. For this reason, members of the Euroregional Youth Assembly will accompany school groups to help collect waste.

With this fifth edition of LCUE, the Euroregion reaffirms its commitment to its objectives in terms of protecting and restoring the natural environment for a shared resilient future by 2030.
